out by a part-time Dental Surgeon, Mr. MacBean, a former full-time
officer in Wood Green, and the eye work by Dr. Boden, our School
Ophthalmic Surgeon.
17.—PARENTS' PAYMENTS.
A small charge is made to parents for treatment given to
children at the dental clinic and the ear clinic, but no charge is
made for attendance at the minor ailments clinic, although a box
is always available for voluntary contributions. Wherever possible,
the full cost of operation for tonsils and adenoids, of artificial
sunlight treatment, and of spectacles provided at the eye clinic is
recovered from parents. When the circumstances of the parents are
such as to make it difficult or impossible for them to meet the full
cost of treatment provided, the case is reported to the Care and
After-Care Committee and the sum charged to the parents reduced
or remitted.
18.—HEALTH EDUCATION.
Teaching of hygiene based on the Board of Education's Handbook
of Suggestions on Health Education is included in the curriculum
and time-tables of all the Senior and Junior Schools, and in
many of the schools considerable attention seems to be given to
this important subject.
For some years past advantage has been taken of the services of
a lecturer provided by the Dental Board of the United Kingdom.
The lecturer visits all the schools, and gives a lecture demonstration
on dental hygiene, the early evidence of dental decay and its
prevention and the importance of early and adequate treatment.
The children appear to be much interested in the lectures which
cannot fail to be helpful.
Use has also been made during the year of the small handbooks
on health published by the Health and Cleanliness Council, and
written specially for boys and girls leaving school. Copies of these
are given to every boy and girl leaving school.
