13.—BLIND, DEAF, DEFECTIVE and EPILEPTIC CHILDREN
A register is kept of all defective children in the district, and
every effort is made to keep this register as accurate as possible.
It is based very largely on the results of the routine and special
medical inspections, but for such children as do not attend school,
we are indebted for assistance to School Attendance Officers, School
Nurses, Health Visitors and others. All defective children are
kept under supervision and seen by the School Medical Officer at
regular intervals. Where the defect is such that a Special School is
indicated, steps are taken to secure this provision.
(а) Blind.
There are no blind children of school age in Wood Green, but
five children whose eyesight was so defective as to make it difficult
for them to profit by instruction in an ordinary elementary school
were in attendance at the School for Partially Sighted Children in
Lordship Lane. These children are under the regular supervision!
of the School Ophthalmic Surgeon, and the school is visited at
regular intervals by the School Medical Officer.
The Wood Green School for the Partially Sighted provides
accommodation not only for our own children but for children from
other educational authorities. The total number of partially
sighted children at the end of the year was twenty-seven. Of these
five belonged to Wood Green, ten to Tottenham, four to Hornsey,
four to Enfield, two to Finchley, one to Edmonton and one to
Middlesex. A mid-day meal is provided at the school for those
children who are unable to go home.
(b) Deaf.
There are six children on the register who are so deaf as not to
be able to profit from instruction at an ordinary elementary school.
These attend the Tottenham Special School for the Deaf.
(c) Mentally Defective.
Eleven mentally defective children from Wood Green were
attending the Joint Special School for Mental Defectives at Finchley.
