The only changes in the personnel of the Staff during the year
were the resignation of Mr. McLaren, the School Dental Officer, in
May, on the occasion of his appointment to a similar post under
the Middlesex County Council, the appointment of Mr. Williams
as his successor, and the appointment of Mr. D. W. MacBean, a
former full-time Dental Officer under this authority, to carry out
the dental inspection and treatment of Secondary School children
on a part-time basis.
All the members of the Staff are full-time officers with the
exception of the Ophthalmic Surgeon, the Aural Surgeon, the
Special Teacher for Speech Defects, and Mr. MacBean. The
Ophthalmic Surgeon holds six Eye Clinics per month, and the
Aural Surgeon two Ear Clinics per month. The speech training
classes are held twice weekly, and two evening sessions per week
are devoted to dental treatment of Secondary School children.
2.—CO-ORDINATION WITH OTHER MEDICAL SERVICES.
The School Medical Officer is also Medical Officer of Health, and
Medical Officer to the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee, and
there is naturally the closest possible co-operation between the
Child Welfare and School Medical work. The specialist medical
and dental services provided by the Education Committee are
available also, by arrangement with the Maternity and Child
Welfare Committee, for children under school age, and this arrangement
makes it possible for defects in young children to be dealt
with as soon as they are apparent, instead of waiting until school
age is reached before treatment is provided.
3.—SCHOOL HYGIENE.
Compared with most years there has been little work of any
considerable extent carried out on school buildings during the year.
The chief work done has been at the Alexandra Schools where
electric light has been installed, the roof retiled, and galleries
removed from the classrooms in the Infants' Department. Minor
improvements have been carried out at various other schools.
4.—MEDICAL INSPECTION.
Medical inspections have been carried out on the same plan as
in previous years, an inspection of all the children in the different
code age-groups having been made in each school during the year.
