The following table gives the numbers of the different infectiousdiseases
notified from the elementary schools:—
Scarlet Fever 174
Diphtheria 18
Chickenpox 172
Measles 530
Mumps 15
Ringworm 9
Whooping Cough 70
Skin Infections 18
Conjunctivitis 58
Total 1,064
It will be seen that measles was responsible for more than half
of the total number of notifications received. This disease was
very prevalent during the early months of the year, 295 notifications
being received from the schools in the first quarter and 211 in the
second, while in the third and fourth the numbers were 21 and 3
respectively. Of the other non-notifiable diseases chickenpox was
responsible for 172 cases and whooping cough for 70. A small
outbreak of conjunctivitis in one of the schools was responsible for
58 cases of "pink eye" which yielded very readily to active treatment
at the school clinic. Scarlet fever was prevalent in the district
throughout the whole year but particularly in the last quarter, and
was responsible in all for 174 cases among elementary school
children. The incidence of diphtheria was very low, only eighteen
cases being reported in school children.

The incidence of Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria during 1934 is shown in the following table:—
