Disinfestation.
During the last three months of the year a considerable
amount of attention had to be paid to the work of ridding a number
of the Council Houses on the White Hart Lane estate from infestation
by bugs. The procedure adopted, which has been found to be
very successful, has briefly been as follows: The woodwork of the
infested rooms, i.e., the skirting boards, architraves and picture
rails, are removed by the carpenter and immediately sprayed or
painted with Cromessol B. solution. The bedding is removed to
the disinfecting station where it is disinfected by steam and
returned the same day. The rooms, meanwhile, are sealed up and
fumigated by a very strong concentration of sulphur dioxide.
Thereafter all defects in the plaster are made good and the skirting
and architraves replaced. It has been found best not to replace the
picture rails. The fumigation is repeated twice at intervals of
seven and fourteen days. The results obtained by this procedure
have on the whole been very satisfactory.
