POPULATION.
The Registrar-General's estimate of population for 1933 was
54,210 and I have used this figure to calculate the birth and death
rates for the year. It represents a slight decrease in the population
from that of 1932, which was 54,500. As the number of births
occurring during the year has been in excess of the deaths, and as
almost eighty new houses have been built, this estimate, if correct,
must mean that the number of people who have left the district
during the year exceeds, by several hundreds, the number who
have come in. The very close approximation of the birth rate to
the death rate, and the fact that very little further building of
new houses can be looked for in the district, would seem to indicate
that the population is not likely to increase any further and that
any change which may take place will be in the direction of a decrease.
BIRTHS.
The number of live births registered during 1933 was 601, as
compared with 681 for the previous year. Of the 601, 315. were
male and 286 female. The birth rate was 11.1 per 1,000 of population,
as compared with 12.5 for the previous year, and establishes
a new low record for the district. The Birth Rate, both for the
whole country and for the 118 great towns (which include Wood
Green) was 14.4, so that in 1933, just as in previous years, the
Birth Rate for Wood Green was very appreciably lower than both
that of the whole country and that of the great towns.
The number of stillbirths registered during the year was 21,
10 male and 11 female.
