I regret to say that her services have not been utilised to anything
like the extent anticipated, and she has had to fill up her time
by giving assistance at the Day Nursery.
I must express surprise that she has not been in greater demand;
it would appear, however, that the women of the District, during their
confinement, prefer to employ a neighbour or other friend rather than
a stranger, however homely and competent she may be.
PROVISION FOR CONFINEMENTS
The same arrangements remain as last year. A formal agreement
has now been entered into with the Edmonton Board of Guardians for
lying-in cases, normal as well as abnormal, in the special ward, known
as the Council's Maternity Ward, Bull Lane, Edmonton, in which only
cases recommended by the Medical Officers of Health of the surround,
ing Districts concerned are admitted.
Arrangements are made for the women to be conveyed to the
Maternity Home by the Council's Motor Ambulance which is available
at all times.
Twenty-two cases were admitted from Wood Green during the
year, most of whom contributed something towards the cost of
maintenance.
Hospital Treatment.
During the year the Great Northern Hospital, Holloway Road,
opened a special clinic in connection with Maternity and Child Welfare
Work for North London, and the following cases have been referred
to and treated thereat:—
Expectant mothers 5
Children under five years

In-patients 7
