In connection with the 1,745 births which took place in institutions in 1936 and the 1,162 births
which occurred at home, it should be observed that application is made for admission to the
Willesden Maternity Hospital by something like 300 cases who have to find accommodation elsewhere
on account of lack of beds in the Hospital. Of these 300 cases, although there is no exact record,
it is probable that 150 are confined in the Central Middlesex County Hospital and other institutions
and 150 are confined at home. The demand, therefore, for institutional confinement is not less than
1,745 plus 150, or say, 1,900 per annum, and this demand is increasing. Should the demand
continue at the same rate as during the past six years it is not unlikely that in the course of a few
years accommodation will be required for a number not far short of the total births occurring in
Willesden, namely, approximately 2,900 per annum. In all these circumstances it would appear
necessary to contemplate an extension of the Hospital to deal with 2,000 cases of midwifery per annum.

It will be noted from the above figures that the present Hospital dealing with approximately
900 cases per annum has from time to time been quite full. 995 cases have been booked to be confined
during 1937 and 1,000 may, therefore, be taken as the maximum number of cases per annum with which
the existing hospital can deal.
