APPENDIX G.
REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE EAR, NOSE AND THROAT DEPARTMENT
for the Year Ended 31st December, 1936.
By G. H. LIVINGSTONE, F.R.C.S., Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon to the Council.
In 1935 all routine tonsil and adenoid cases were operated upon at Willesden General Hospital;
in 1936 a new scheme was adopted, and children with enlarged tonsils were admitted to the Municipal
Hospital. A separate pavilion has been converted into two wards between which are an operating
theatre and an anaesthetic room. Eight children are admitted twice weekly. This scheme has now
been working for eight months and is running very smoothly.

Breathing Exercises.
All children who have had tonsil or adenoid operations are automatically referred for special
breathing exercises. These exercises take place at Health Centres I and III under the supervision of
trained nurses. At Health Centre III they are carried out in artificial sunlight. Each child is expected
to attend twice weekly for six weeks.
The exercises are proving extremely beneficial to the children, and attendances are regular.
Unfortunately, there is no accommodation for these classes at Health Centre II, and children who
require breathing exercises have to be transferred from this Centre to Centre I or III.
