MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
This section of the service continues to progress and to make increasing claims upon the staff.
It has been necessary to assign the equivalent of 475 sessions to this work.
1,003 mothers and 509 infants have been inspected, an increase of 326 over the corresponding
figure of the previous year. 49 of these patients (36 of whom were infants) had no defect. Of the
deferred cases, 890 were treated at the Clinics. Conservative dentistry played a more prominent
part in their treatment. It may be assumed from this that the condition of the teeth of these patients
showed less extensive defect than usual.
The number of the teeth filled, namely, 1,522, is an increase of 551, a figure considerably more
than half as much again as 1934. Likewise, incidental work has increased by 877 from 1,129 to 1,906.
On the other hand, the number of teeth extracted has fallen by 1,025, from 6,440 to 5,415. 281
mothers were supplied with dentures, while two had their dentures repaired. 231 were presented
free; 50 at part cost and two at full cost to the patients. The total attendances made by all patients
is 5,269, an average of 11 cases per session. A full summary of the year's work is given in the table
below in comparison with the year 1934.
