APPENDIX L.
Submitted to the Health Committee on May 14th, 1935.
MEMORANDUM ON TREATMENT OF ENLARGED TONSILS AND ADENOIDS.
The Council at its last meeting adopted the following report of the Education Committee:—
"We have received a letter, dated 27th March, 1935, from the Willesden General
Hospital, giving notice of termination of the agreement for the treatment of enlarged tonsils
and adenoids on a date to be arranged. The position is that the Education Committee will
now have to make other arrangements for the treatment of tonsils and adenoids in school
children, and it appears to us that this is a matter for consideration of the Health Committee
of the Council with a view to these cases being treated at the Municipal Hospital. The Willesden
General Hospital state that they would appreciate the views of the Education Committee as
to the date of the termination of the agreement, and after consideration, we recommend:—
That the letter from the Willesden General Hospital be forwarded to the Health Committee
of the Council for their consideration and report."
In order that the Health Committee may be in a position to consider the question, I beg to
submit the following information :—
The table below shows the number of children who have been treated at the Willesden General Hospital under the Council's Scheme relating to enlarged tonsils and adenoids during the past 3 years:—
Year. | Children under 5. | School Children. | T otal. |
---|---|---|---|
1934 | 121 | 343 | 464 |
1933 | 164 | 383 | 547 |
1932 | 165 | 453 | 618 |
Average | 150 | 393 | 543 |
In order to carry out this work at the Municipal Hospital 7 or 8 additional beds would be
required. As cubicles are specially needed at the Willesden Municipal Hospital it is suggested that
beds in Block B at the Hospital should be used for the cases of enlarged tonsils and adenoids and the
additional beds be provided as cubicles for the other purposes of the Hospital. As these cubicle
pavilions are built in units of 10, this being the most economical size for nursing purposes, it is suggested
that a cubicle pavilion of 10 beds be provided.
