THE FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT ON
NURSERY CLASSES
for the
Year ending 31st December, 1934.
LOWER PLACE NURSERY CLASSES.
30 children attending Lower Place Nursery Classes were medically examined last year, 21 of
whom (group A) were examined for the first time, and 9 (group B) had their second routine medical
inspection according to the scheme in force.
Group A.—5 were examined between 2 and 3 years of age.
11 were examined between 3 and 4 years of age.
3 were examined between 4 and 5 years of age.
2 were 5 years of age.
Group B.—1 was between 3 and 4 years of age.
8 were between 4 and 5 years of age.
In addition there were 3 re.examinations.
Group A.—The following defects were found in this group of children.
Enlarged Tonsils.—10 were found to have enlarged tonsils in varying degrees. 2 have since
had them removed, one of whom had suffered from profuse otorrhœa. 1 was admitted to hospital
for the operation, but this had to be postponed as he was found to have bronchitis. The parents of
2 other cases who were advised to have tonsillectomy by the Council's Laryngologist are postponing
the operation until the children are older. 2 more whose tonsils are only moderately enlarged, and
which are up to the present causing no symptoms, are booked for re.examination in 6 months' time.
In the remaining 3 cases the enlargement was very slight and uncomplicated.
Bony Affections.—10 cases were found.
(1) Postural Kyphosis.—1 case was found in association with Enlarged Tonsils, Otorrhcea and
a functional systolic bruit.
(2) Outward Curvature of Tibia and Genu Varum.—This case improved under treatment in
the Orthopaedic Department.
(3) Overlapping Toes.—1 case was found in which there was no disability, so that the parent
did not wish treatment at present.
(4) Genu Valgum.—7 cases of this condition in varying degrees were found. 2 were slight
and are being seen again in 1 year. 1 has had treatment at the Orthopaedic Department.
1, a manifestation of rickets associated with a protuberant abdomen, has had Ultra
Violet Ray Therapy at the Health Centre. 2 cases, 1 of whom had recently had
tonsillectomy as advised, were unable to attend for treatment. 1 was a re.examination
referred from last year, and was found to have improved.
Respiratory Affections.—4 children were found to be suffering from Bronchial Catarrh. The
first was associated with Enlarged Tonsils which have since been removed. The second was associated
with Enlarged Tonsils, and is having tonsillectomy later on. The third was associated with subnormal
nutrition. The fourth was associated with slightly Enlarged Tonsils and Genu Valgum. All
were treated by private doctors.
Cardiac Conditions.—1 child, who had recovered from Diphtheria, was found to have a functional
systolic bruit. He is being re.examined in 3 months.
Group B.—The following defects were found among the children comprising this group.
