THE THIRD ANNUAL REPORT ON
NURSERY CLASSES
for the
Year ending 31st December, 1933.
LOWER PLACE NURSERY CLASSES.
During 1933 39 children in the Nursery Classes were examined under the scheme in force.
Group A.-22 had their first routine medical inspection. Of these:-
6 were between 2 and 3 years of age.

1 was 5 years of age.
Group B.-5 had their second routine medical inspection. Of these:-
2 were between 3 and 4 years of age.

Group C.-2 had their third routine medical inspection. Of these:-
1 was between 3 and 4 years of age.

Group D.-9 were re-examined for a defect or defects found at the routine examination or
re-examination of the previous year.
1 was specially referred.
Group A.-Children examined at their first routine medical inspection.
Among the above children, the following medical defects were found
(1) Enlarged Tonsils.-This, as usual, was the most prevalent defect. 9, 5 of whom were
between the ages of 3 and 4 years, were referred to the Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon who advised
tonsillectomy in 6 cases ( 3 have not yet attended to see him). 1 child has since had the operation,
the parent of another has definitely refused it, while 4 are postponing it until the children are older.
2 showed some slight tonsillar enlargement which at present is causing no symptoms. Both are
being re-examined again in 6 months.
(2) Bony affections.-8 cases were found. I was a case of Rickets with enlarged epiphyses
and protuberant abdomen. She is now having Sunlight Treatment at the Centre. 2 had Valgus
Ankles. 1 was referred to the orthopaedic department, while the other, in which the condition was
very slight, was scheduled for a re-examination in 3 months. 4 had Genu Valgum. 1 was referred
to the orthopaedic department, 1 was very slight and referred for re-examination in 6 months,
while the remaining 2 had been under treatment at the Centre and were found to be much
improved. 1 was a case of Postural Kyphosis associated with Enlarged Tonsils and fatigue. He is
now attending the Centre for treatment.
(3) Bronchial Catarrh and Bronchitis.-6 were noted, most of whom had medical treatment as
advised. In addition there were: 2 cases of Dermatitis which were treated and cured; 1 case of
Squint which is under hospital treatment; 1 case of Enuresis which is under hospital treatment;
1 case of Otorrhœa associated with Enlarged Tonsils which is attending the Centre.
1 child had a Hernia and was wearing a truss supplied at the hospital.
Group B.-Children examined at their second routine medical inspection.
All 5 had gained in height and weight. 3 who had been found to have Enlarged Tonsils, and
had been advised tonsillectomy, had had the operation. The condition of Genu Valgum noted in
3 had improved under treatment. 1 had had a nævus, noted at the first medical inspection,
treated at hospital. 1 case of Otorrhœa had been cured at the Centre.
