APPENDIX E.
REPORT ON WORK IN THE EYE DEPARTMENT FOR THE YEAR ENDED
31st DECEMBER, 1933,
By FRANK W. LAW, M.A.,M.D.,F.R.C.S.,B.Chir., Ophthalmic Surgeon to the Council.
The total figures for the year are shown below. Those for the preceding three years are
also given for the purposes of comparison.
Total Attendances.
1930 3,740
1931 6,118
1932 7,303
1933 7,385
Refraction Cases.
Appointments made. Appointments kept. Percentage Attendance.
1930 1,351 1,030 76.2%
1931 1,427 1,220 85.5%
1932 1,782 1,546 86.7%
1933 1,525 1,352 88.7%
Arrangements are now such that it is possible to keep the numbers attending the sessions
within manageable limits ; it will be noticed that the average number of Refraction Appointments
booked per session has fallen by just over 1, and the Refraction Attendances by almost exactly 1,
at each Clinic. It has rarely been necessary to deal with an unwieldy number of refractions ;
the following table shows the number of occasions upon which more than 12, and more than 15,
appointments have been booked:—

The general routine at the sessions remains unaltered. The optical dispensing has been
satisfactorily carried out; the fact that the optician has not been changed for some years has made
it possible thoroughly to supervise the work, with the result that one now knows that this is
efficient and thorough ; this knowledge has enabled one still further to reduce the number of
unimportant attendances.
Treatment cases have been enthusiastically and satisfactorily cared for ; a few cases have
been, as before, admitted to the Central London Ophthalmic Hospital, or to the Paddington Green
Children's Hospital, under my care, for treatment or operation.
The figures for the year are as follows:-
