THE FORTY-FIRST ANNUAL REPORT
ON THE
MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL
By ARTHUR G. TROUP, M.D., D.RH ,
Medical Superintendent.
During 1932, 869 patients were admitted to hospital as compared with 842 in 1931, 1,029 in
1930, 955 in 1929, 1,037 in 1928 and 767 in 1927.
Cerebro-Spinal Fever.
Eight cases of this disease were admitted to hospital during the year, and one case remained
over from the previous year, giving a total of nine cases under treatment. Five deaths occurred.
In order to arrive at a true hospital mortality rate, it is the usual custom to deduct those deaths
which occurred within 48 hours of admission. Three cases come under this category, and the deduction
gives a mortality rate of 22.2 per cent. The cases which recovered were in a satisfactory mental
and physical condition at the date of discharge from hospital.
Diphtheria.
180 cases were admitted to hospital compared with 250 cases during 1931. These cases may
be classified as follows:—Faucial 128, Nasal 33, Faucial and Nasal 10, Aural 10, Laryngeal 5, Bacteriological
3, Wound 1.
It was necessary to perform the operation of tracheotomy on two of the laryngeal cases.
Both made very good recoveries. The total number of deaths from diphtheria was 10, giving a corrected
mortality rate of 4.5 per cent. The corresponding mortality rate for England and Wales
for the year 1931 was 5.3 per cent.
Enteric Fever.
One case of Typhoid Fever, 1 of Paratyphoid Fever B, and 1 Paratyphoid Fever B carrier
were admitted during the year. The case of Typhoid Fever proved fatal. He was admitted to
hospital on the 11th day of illness, and subsequently had several haemorrhages. Later perforation
of the intestine occurred.
Erysipelas.
Twenty-two cases of this disease were treated during the course of the year, and 1 death
occurred.
