Forty-nine samples of milk were taken during the year for examination for the presence of
tubercle bacilli under the Milk and Dairies (Consolidation) Act, 1915.
Six samples (Nos. 0/213, 0/215, 0/216, 0/221/0/230 and 0/245) were found to contain tubercle
bacilli, and action was taken resulting in the examination of the herds at the supplying farms.
0/213.—Three cows were individually sampled. In addition a bulk sample was taken from
the remainder of the herd. Microscopical examination of one cow individually sampled shewed the
presence of excess of cells, and a notice restricting the sale of milk from that cow was immediately
served upon the owner. Animal inoculation tests revealed living tubercle bacilli in one individual
sample, and the animal was slaughtered. The result of the remaining bulk sample proved positive.
The herd was re-examined and one cow was sampled owing to a slight induration of the udder. In
addition, a bulk sample was collected from the cows not suspected. No tubercle bacilli was found in
either of the samples.
In view of the complex nature of the investigations, milk from this farm is being closely watched.
