School for Mothers at Lower Place.
The weekly session, apart from the school holidays, has been continued during this year, 40
sessions being held at which 401 mothers and 427 children attended, making an average per session
of 10.2 mothers and 10.7 children. Ten mothers and 13 children were new attendants during the
year.
Nine mothers entered for a needlework competition, the articles made being judged by Miss
Dixon of Lower Place School, who reports as follows:—
"I had much pleasure in examining the needlework offered for competition at the
Mothercraft Centre at Lower Place, on 9th December, 1929.
There were 2 Classes. Class 1.—Garment in Knitting or Crochet. Class 2.—Reconstructed
Garment.
In both classes the standard reached, was high, both 'Firsts' winning, deserved full marks,
and the second and third separated by one mark. Particular mention should be made of the
initiative and thought that went to the making of the little garments entered in Class 2 and
the stimulus given by the Competition, will certainly prove very beneficial in a neighbourhood
where the garments are usually handed down without much 'reconstruction.' "
