THE THIRTY-FIFTH ANNUAL REPORT
FOR THE
Year ending 31st December, 1926,
ON THE
MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL
By A. G. TROUP, M.D., D.P.H.
During 1926, 846 patients were admitted as compared with 601 in 1925, 626 in 1924, and
674 in 1923.
Scarlet Fever.
During the past year 306 cases of this disease were admitted, and there were no deaths. There
were 203 cases in 1925. A considerable proportion of these cases were of a mild nature, a smaller
proportion were of a moderately severe type, and a few were of a severe septic type.
Serum Treatment of Scarlet Fever.
During the year a certain number of Scarlet Fever cases have been treated with scarlet fever
anti-toxin. The cases come under two categories, first, a few cases which have arisen in the Hospital,
and second, cases admitted to Hospital in which the acute symptoms have been well marked. I
think that the results obtained demonstrate that the treatment is beneficial, although a certain
number of complications have occurred. The effect of the serum in some of the cases treated early
has been striking. The acute symptoms, including the rash, disappearing within 24 hours, and the
desquamation has been very slight. In the tables, only complications which arose after the serum
had been injected are given.
Number of cases treated 75
Percentage of cases which developed complications 21.3%
Percentage of cases which developed complications during the year 1925 (serum
had not been given) 37.9%
Percentage of cases in which acute symptoms subsided within two days 72%
Percentage of cases, treated within the first four days of illness, which developed
complications 16%
Percentage of cases treated on or after the 5th day of illness which developed
complications 50%
