PADDINGTON GREEN CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.
(Incorporated.)
RHEUMATISM SUPERVISORY CENTRE.
(For the supervision of Children suffering from Rheumatism, St. Vitus' dance and Rheumatic Heart
Disease.)
The Centre is intended to meet the need shewn by rheumatic cases for careful supervision during
periods of apparent quiescence to prevent the development of heart disease.
The plan adopted is to supervise the care of the children when apparently well by periodical
examinations, and to instruct the parents in writing to consult their usual practitioner or hospital,
should fresh symptoms of rheumatism supervene. Treatment at the Centre itself is only given in
urgent cases.
In this way it is hoped that the Centre will form a useful link between practitioners, the School
Medical Service and the hospitals for the benefit of the patients.
Further, instruction is given to parents in the care of rheumatic children ; and investigations
into the causation of rheumatism in Paddington are being made.
The Centre is under the direction of Dr. Reginald Miller, Honorary Physician to the Hospital,
and has behind it all the scientific resources of the Hospital. It is under the control of the Board of
Management of the Hospital.
Note.
(1) The Centre is only open to rheumatic childrpn living in the Borough of Paddington (except
in the case of children already patients of the hospital).
(2) The Centre is open every Saturday. Admission 1 to 2 p.m.
(3) No charge is made for admission. Any treatment given by the Hospital is subject to the
usual charges for In or Out-patients.
A leaflet (parents paper), to be given to the parent of each child brought to this supervisory
centre, contains the following advice :—
PADDINGTON GREEN CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.
(Incorporated.)
RHEUMATISM SUPERVISORY CENTRE.
(FOR RHEUMATISM, ST. VITUS'S DANCE & RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE).
The Centre is open every Saturday. Admission (free) 1 to 2 o'clock.
The object of the Centre is to keep a watch over your child, so as to prevent it from getting
a fresh attack of rheumatism or developing heart disease, without your knowing that anything
is wrong.
The chief danger of rheumatism in children is heart disease, and this may develop so
quietly that it can only be detected by a doctor's examination. The Centre offers you the
opportunity of having your child's heart examined periodically with a view to preventing its
becoming affected.
The Centre is not a treatment clinic, and will not interfere in any way with the treatment
from the Hospital or private doctor who usually looks after your child. It is intended to help
you to take the best care of your child while it is apparently well, and to warn you as early as
possible of any symptoms requiring medical attention.
A card will be sent to you to remind you when your next visit is due ; but if you are in
any doubt or difficulty about your child, you can bring it to the Centre on any Saturday.
If the child becomes ill, do not wait for the Centre to be open, but obtain advice at once
from :
You should read the suggestions overleaf.
"Rheumatism, and Parents and Teachers.
In view of the characteristics of this disease, enlightenment of these two classes of persons would
greatly assist the medical profession, and in turn engender in it a greater sense of responsibility for
the control of rheumatism.
The following leaflet (based upon one issued by Dr. F. J. Poynton) has been issued by the
Bristol Education Committee to all its head teachers.
