THE EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
for the
Year 1925,
on
DENTAL WORK in connection with SCHOOL CHILDREN,
EXPECTANT and NURSING MOTHERS and CHILDREN
under 5 years.
By E. A. JENNINGS, L.D.S., R.C.S.Eng.
The new conditions under which patients may now attend the Clinics have resulted in an
increase in the amount of work during the year over that of 1924.
1,860 children have actually received treatment and 4,384 attendances for treatment were
recorded. 2,202 fillings were done, and 4,217 teeth removed, for which general anaesthetics were
administered on 1,267 occasions and local on 726. In addition, 435 other operations were performed
on the mouths.
It has been necessary to devote 7 sessions for treatment at the Clinics and to reduce the school
inspection session to 4 per week, in consequence of which only about two-thirds of the total school
population have been subject to inspection.
Additional propaganda work has been undertaken during the year. This was made possible
by the Dental Board's offer to loan free films on the care of the teeth. This offer was accepted by
the Education Committee and the proprietors of all the local cinemas were appealed to, 7 of whom
oftered to exhibit the films during the ordinary week-end programmes, while special matinees were
arranged at 2 theatres for children to attend during school hours at an admission charge of 2d. per
head.
These pictures are instructive and entertaining, and a series of exhibitions were arranged from
April to August, and although over 42,000 people witnessed them wider publicity is still required.
The following Table No. 44, corresponding to Table IV., Group IV., of Appendix H. of the
Annual Report of the Chief Medical Officer of the Board of Education for 1923, gives details of the
age groups of children inspected, together with time given and work done at the Clinics on those cases,
which received treatment under the Council's scheme.
