Section. Headquarters, 69, Manor Park Road, Harlesden, N.W. 10. Commandant, H. H. Bobart,
M.B.E. Hon. Secretary, H. Hayward.
The Willesden Section of the 23rd Middlesex (Men's) Voluntary Aid Detachment consists
at the present time of about 20 members, who have all obtained their First Aid Certificates.
They have been actively engaged during the War chiefly in the transport of wounded soldiers
from Central Military Hospitals to Auxiliaries.
The members are keeping up their practice in First Aid and are prepared to assist in the case
of street accidents to the best of their ability. The section is still maintaining an ambulance, which
is available for civilian cases by arrangement. The cost of upkeep and petrol is met by the proceeds
of occasional Whist Drives and Concerts, and a charge of 1s. per mile made for running the ambulance
when patients are in a position to pay. In cases where the patients are too poor to make any payment,
the Section has been pleased to undertake ambulance work gratis.
(16) Voluntary Aid Detachment, Middlesex 58 (Women's). Commandant, Mrs. Aubrey
Richardson, St. John Vicarage, Kilburn, N.W. 6.
This Detachment was demobilised from Dollis Hill House Auxiliary Military Hospital at
the end of March, 1919.
Upon the urgent request of the County-Director and the Joint Committee of the Order of
St. John's and British Red Cross Society, and because of the desire of the majority of the members
to carry on for civil health and welfare work, and for Nursing Service with the Territorial Force, the
Detachment did not disband.
Drills and Meetings have been held at irregular intervals during the year April 1919 to April
1920. Its membership now is 80.
Classes for Home Nursing and First Aid for the Order of St. John's Ambulance Certificates
have been held; A. C. Mowbray-Swertz, Esq., M.B., Ch.B., B.A.O., being the Honorary Lecturer.
In July 1919, the Detachment gave a "Welcome Home" Garden Party to the Disabled and
Discharged Men of the South Kilburn District, in the Paddington Recreation Ground. Nearly
400 men and their wives attended, and these with friends of the Detachment who helped in providing
for the guests, made up a party of over 800. The men were given a substantial and attractive supper
in a marquee. A good tea was provided for the women. Sports and a Cricket Match for Prizes
were arranged, and there was a Band for Dancing and a Musical Entertainment. The cost of the
Garden Party was £84 10s. 7d., besides the value of Members' Food Contributions and other gifts
in kind.
For two evenings weekly since November, the Detachment has managed a canteen in connection
with the St. John's, Kilburn, Ex-Service Men's Club at the Mission Hall, Carlton Vale. The
refreshments provided have been much appreciated.
