extended to include teaching in sewing, cookery and general
house management. All instruction given is made extremely
simple and as practical as possible in order that the mothers
may easily understand and profit by the teaching.
The Classes and "Health Talks," which may be given
by the Doctor or Nurse, should last about 15-20 minutes,
otherwise the mothers become inattentive and gain nothing.
The " Talks " may be arranged for the same afternoon
as the Infant consultation.
A room should be fitted up as a nursery for the use of
the children, during the absence of the mother, the child
being cared for by an attendant or voluntary helpers attached
to the centre.
Other classes may be held during the week according
to requirements and provided the necessary accommodation
is available.
At some centres the sewing class has proved most useful.
The instruction is elementary and graded to suit the
type of mother attending.
Simple and inexpensive model baby clothes are shown,
patterns cut and supervision given in the making which may
be done either at home or at the school. The mothers are
also taught how to knit various woollen garments. Material,
such as flannel, calico, and wool, which could not otherwise
be afforded, is sold at cost price. At centres with the necessary
voluntary help, baby clothes made by friends, are
also sold at cost price. In this way the mothers are taught
the best and most economical method of clothing a child.
Where a sewing class is he'd it is essential that the
person in charge should be fully qualified in the work undertaken,
and also possess the necessary teaching ability.
