V. "Kindercot" Sanatorium School, Peppard Common,
Oxfordshire.
This school is attached to the Maitland Sanatorium
but is entirely separate from the adult institution. It is for
20 children, sent there by the Berkshire and Bucks County
Councils. The area on which the entire institution stands is
about 50 acres.
(1) The school building is of weather boarding lined by
matchboarding. It was presented as a gift to the
institution some years ago, and although additional
windows have been provided since its erection it is
still not of a sufficiently ''open air" character,
according to the Medical Superintendent, Dr.
Esther Carling. As much teaching as possible is
given out of doors.
(2) A new school building for 60 children is under con-
sideration, the three class-rooms to be placed along
three sides of a central hall.
(3) The dormitories for the children are partly open-air
shelters and partly open-air wards.
(4) The floors of the wards are composed of petropine,
which is a form of wood composition which is
stated to wear well and to be easily kept clean.
(5) One teacher is employed.
VI. St. Vincent's Cripples' Home Eastcote, near Pinner.
This is an institution similar in character to " Woodlands,"
Northfield. There are 115 beds for children suffering
mainly from tuberculous disease of the bones and joints.
The home is under the care of the Sisters of Charity of
St. Vincent de Paul. The area of the site is about 25 acres.
During our visit the following points especially were
brought to our notice:—
(1) An old house has been adapted for administrative
purposes.
