Local Centres.—In addition, it will be necessary to
establish a number of local centres, and for this it will be
necessary either to have premises specially built for the purpose
or to adapt existing premises, if this is practicable.
Probably as a beginning it would be advisable to establish
one centre in the Kilburn area and one in the Church End,
Stonebridge, Roundwood area.
Each centre could probably be rented at £100 per
annum, and would cost, to furnish, equip, alter and decorate,
say £500.
In addition to the annual rent above mentioned there
would be an annual outlay in respect of caretakers' wages
at 35s. per week, i.e., £91 per annum. Allowing £109 for
other charges, the annual cost of maintenance would become
£300.
Nutrition.
The cost of this has already been put down at £5,598
per annum, but the above centres do not include provision
for the feeding of expectant mothers and young children.
This work is, to my mind, essential, and if it is to be undertaken
it will probably be found necessary to have centres
specially built, in order that this necessity may be met.
Centres so built could also be used in respect of schools for
mothers.
SUMMARY OF COST.
The total estimated cost indicated in respect of all the
above work is as follows:—
Capital Expenditure— £
Hospital accommodation 36,000
Two local centres (Baby Clinics) 1,000
Further local centres, to include provision for
feeding and schools for mothers
Total £37,000
