Municipal Offices,
Dyne Road, Kilburn, N.W.,
3rd June, 1914.
To the Chairman and Members of the
Willesden Urban District Education Committee.
I beg to present herewith the Sixth Annual Report of
the School Medical Officer for the year ending
December 31st, 1913.
During the year 9,343 children were medically examined.
Amongst this number there were found to be 813
suffering with malnutrition, 1,108 with dirty, nitty or verminous
conditions of the scalp or body, 130 with ringworm,
or other skin diseases, 2,112 with four or more carious
teeth, 3,(547 with diseases of the nose and throat including
enlarged tonsils and adenoids, and 930 with defective
vision.
A Ringworm Clinic was established during the year,
and the Committee have before them schemes for the
treatment of eyes and teeth.
The large proportion of children noted to be suffering
from malnutrition merits the consideration of the Committee.
The feeding of school children and open air teaching,
associated with proper schemes of medical treatment are the
essential remedies.
Little progress has been made during the year with
the establishment of an Open Air School in Willesden,
mainly on account of delay in connection with Government
Departments. But it is hoped that the Committee will be in
a position at an early date to make the necessary provision
