The population of Willesden from 1851, according to the Census
returns, has been as follows:—

It may seem strange with an excess of births over deaths
amounting to 2,494 that the estimated increase of population for
the year amounts only to 1,110. The explanation lies in the fact
that only 155 occupied houses have been added to the District during
the year, the number of empty houses having increased from 949 to
1,027. It may be remarked that since Midsummer the number of
empty houses has diminished to 933 at Christmas. At first sight it
would appear that an excess of births over deaths of 2,494 persons
