At the present moment we have resident in our district
388 persons, all suffering from this disease. Here, indeed, is
an admission of failure from a Eugenic point of view, and a
serious reproach to their mode of life in this very salubrious
district.
NUMBER OF MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS.
It will interest you to know that we have a list of fiftyfour
medical practitioners resident and practising in the
Urban District of Wembley and another list of 35 of those
outside Wembley who practise in the district. In this class
of medical practice it is usual to allow an average of about
two thousand persons to each resident practitioner, so that,
with the advent of more doctors to the district (resident or
otherwise) the present staff may fail to obtain their fair share
of work and experience.
WEMBLEY AS A RESIDENTIAL DISTRICT.
Frequently I receive letters from people in different parts
of the country who propose to buy a house and take up
residence in Wembley, but who first desire to ascertain if they
would be wise in so doing. They generally add: "Is Wemley,
being on a clay soil, a suitable, or desirable spot for
residence when considering a tendency to rheumatism,
asthma, or any chest affection?"
My reply, based on long experience, is to the effect that,
provided the house is dry, the road made up, and suitable
clothing is worn, Wembley, for the ordinary healthy person,
is undoubtedly one of the most bracing, salubrious districts
anywhere near London, and especially beneficial to children.
The purity of the atmosphere is always immediately apparent
on arriving from London by train—the drainage is excellent
—the well-made roads dry in half an hour after heavy rain—
the amount of available sunshine is double that of the city
and East End—hardly any pollution of the atmosphere
occurs from the Alperton and Exhibition factories—the water
supply (frequently tested) is of the best, and though hard,
is definitely softer than that of all the other neighbouring
companies—added to this our death-rate is, and always had
been, one of the lowest in the County—the undulating charcter
of the district, especially of the Kingsbury area, and the
many parks, recreation grounds, open spaces and other
amenities, greatly add to the charm of Wembley as a residential
district.
