CANCER.
Last year, 1934, there were 91 deaths from this disease
in the district, 54 men, 37 women. In 1933—90 in the combined
districts—73 in 1932—66 in 1931. Taking the average
for the last four years, the percentage rate per 1,000 of population
is 1.01, a figure which is considerably lower that that
for England and Wales, which is 1.50.
I am sure that this number can be lessened by the determination
of sufferers to seek advice at an earlier stage. The
presence of a small, new growth anywhere about the body
should be at once a matter of concern, and its true nature
ascertained. The presence of any unusual discharge, especially
of an offensive character, should be immediately
rectified. No one should be satisfied with anything less, and
if necessary should see a doctor many times and be absolutely
assured of their position. All superficial cancers are curable
