There have been a few cases of births to unmarried mothers ; in these the
mother has either been treated at home, or admission obtained for her to a lyingin
home specially set apart for such.
In the case of children deprived of a home with their own parents it is usual
for them to be placed out with foster parents. The Council's Creche is able also
to take a certain number of children boarders from Monday to Saturday, and this
is a convenience to some Mothers who are at work during the week but free at
the week-end. (see next section).
In addition to the Notifiable Infectious Diseases, particulars of which are
given in Table II., there was a considerable number of cases of Measles, German
Measles, Whooping Cough and Chicken Pox.
Miss Elinor Tomlinson who succeeded to the post of Health Visitor on
November 8th, 1920, has kindly supplied me with the above figures.
THE CRECHE.
This was established in June, 1917, and the Staff now consists of the Matron
(Miss Collins) and 3 Nurses, one of whom was trained at the Nursery College, and
holds the Certificate of that Institution and also the Certificate of the National
League of Health. During the year under review the daily attendances of children
amounted to 10,087, an average of 27.6 per day throughout the year. Most of
them are the children of working women, some of the latter being employed in
Hotels or Domestic Service. The remainder are those of women who are sick, or
who live at a distance.
Except for one or two delicate and premature babies the children have all
been thoroughly healthy. 1 hree cases of Infectious Disease occurred, two of these
being Scarlet Fever and one Tuberculous Meningitis.
Parents are encouraged to come whenever they can to see their children
and satisfy themselves that the latter are happy and well cared for.
The charges have been increased somewhat, and are now as follows:
By the day for one child 10d. per day, for two or more 9d. each.
by the week, from Monday morning till Saturday mid-day 9/- per child ;
