In Table 1 (page 56), the corresponding rates for the past ten years will be
found. It will be seen that the fall in the birth-rate, which has gone on
during the war, has continued during 1917 at a greater rate than ever.
The birth rate in 1917 was only 18.2 per 1,000, while in 1913, the year
before the war, it was 24'7 per 1,000.
543 births occurred in Public Institutions in the borough, equal to 14.9 percent.
of the total births which took place in the borough.
Illegitimacy.
Of the 3,635 births which were registered in the borough 229, or 6.3 per
cent., were returned as illegitimate.
Of the 3,796 births to parishioners within and without the borough, 275, or
7'2 per cent., were registered as illegitimate. The corresponding figures for
1916, 1915, 1914 and 1913 were 7.0, 5.4, 4.4 and 4.7 per cent, respectivelv.
Notification of Births.
Notifications were received during the year of 3,471 births, including 3,355
live births, or 95'5 per cent, of the number of births registered.

In the table below the notified births are also classified (in Registration Sub-Districts and Wards) according to the person in attendance upon the mother in her confinement.
