The abandonment of vehicles within the Borough has not, so
far, become the problem in Southgate that it has in many areas.
20 such vehicles were removed by the Council during 1964. Many
owners no longer wanting their vehicles have, fortunately, sought
the advice of the Council regarding disposal. In cases in which the
owner has been a resident of the Borough, the Council has made
available a free disposal service on delivery of the vehicle at the
Refuse Disposal Works.
The sale of salvage recovered from the refuse realised an
income of £16,349. This is an increase of £810 over the previous
year. Tonnages of materials salvaged were as follows:—
tons
Waste Paper 1,459
Scrap Metals 523
Rags 25
Bottles 3
Carpet 23
Gullet 71
Miscellaneous 20
Street Cleansing
The normal frequency of sweeping of streets in the Borough
was as follows:—
miles
At least once daily 6
Three times weekly 12

Once weekly 6
Control of weed growths on pavements, etc., throughout the
Borough was effected by the application of chemical weed killer.
During the year 11,262 gully cleansings were carried out.
Fumes and Noise
During 1964, 13 complaints were received from residents
concerning alleged nuisances from fumes arising in one instance
from industrial premises and in seven instances from domestic
premises. In the case of the industrial premises, observations were
made and steps taken to obtain the co-operation of the firm
concerned, with the result that the nuisances were abated. In the
case of the domestic premises, the complaints concerned fumes
arising from oil-fired central heating installations. Each complaint
was investigated by the Public Health Inspectors and the occupiers
advised upon remedial action.
Twenty complaints were received from residents concerning
alleged nuisances from noise. The noises arose from various sources
