GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES
Care of the Aged
Fortunately the residents of Southgate continue to live as a rule
to a ripe old age— and in most cases to an active and happy old age.
There are however, a considerable number of elderly people who
are lonely and out of touch with the services which are provided1 to
help them and it is towards these people that our efforts are especially
directed. The Old Peoples Welfare Committee are continually
expanding their services and the Centre at Ruth Winston House is
of inestimable benefit.
The Elderly Persons' Advice Clinics also are being extended so
that they will be available to elderly people in the various parts of
the Borough. Until recently sessions were held fortnightly at Ruth
Winston House. It has now been arranged1 to hold monthly sessions
at each of four centres, Ruth Winston House, Green Lanes, N.13;
Broomfield House, Broomfield Park, N.13; Combined Clinic, Bowes
Road, N.ll; and de Bohun Clinic, Green Road, N.14. These
Advice Clinics will be attended by Dr. O'Callaghan, together with a
member of the nursing staff.
Laundry Service for Aged Incontinent Persons
This service was set up in Wood Green in 1963 to serve the
Boroughs of Wood Green and Southgate and the Urban District
of Friern Barnet. It is an excellent example of co-operation between
three local authorities, all of whom have this service closely at heart.
With the coming changes other arrangements have had to be
made and as from 1st March laundry for Southgate will be dealt
with at Colindale Isolation Hospital. St. Ann's Hospital, Tottenham,
however, hope quite soon to be able to accept Southgate laundry,
together with that for Edmonton.
I am grateful to the three councils and to the officers, particularly
of the Engineer's Department in Wood Green, who have made
the scheme work so smoothly and efficiently and also to Mrs.
Mitchell, the Area Home Help Organiser, for the extra work she has
willingly put into this service.
Chiropody Service
Southgate is very fortunate in retaining the services of Mr.
Rockman, the whole-time chiropodist appointed by the County to
Area 2. He will continue to hold sessions at de Bohun Clinic and
also to carry out domiciliary work.
