I need hardly emphasise the increasing amount of work falling
upon the Public Health Inspectors particularly in the field of smoke
control and housing. With our seriously depleted staff of Public
Health Inspectors, it is greatly to their credit that no vital part of
the work has suffered neglect and that the volume of work covered
is so impressive.
With the coming merger of the personal and environmental
health services in the new Borough of Enfield, the close and friendly
co-operation of the staffs of the Borough and the County Area is
particularly fortunate. Especially is this so in relation to the care of
the aged and in health education.
To the great sorrow of his staff and, I am sure, of the Council,
Dr. Harvey, after a year's sick leave, resigned his appointment in
October. His interest, however, in the staff and in the work of the
Council still continues. In April Dr. Harvey was created a Freeman
of the Borough—a fitting reward for his great service to
Southgate.
On Dr. Harvey's retirement, Dr. Leonora Crawford was
appointed as my Deputy. To her and to Mr. A. E. Gooday, my
Chief Public Health Inspector my very special thanks are due, also
to Miss Barratt and indeed to every member of the Public Health
Department.
In conclusion I would once again express my thanks to the
Council particularly to the Chairman and Members of the Public
Health Committee for their unfailing courtesy and support.
I am, Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen
Your obedient Servant
JANET R. CAMPBELL
Medical Officer of Health
