PREVALENCE AND CONTROL OF
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
From the table of infectious diseases set out on page 31, it will
be seen that 1,560 cases of infectious disease were notified during
the year against 188 in 1962. The Infectious Sickness Rate for the
year was therefore 20.18 as compared with 2.62 during the previous
year.
The following table sets out the infectious diseases notified
during 1963, as compared with the notifications received during
1962:—
1963 1962
Scarlet fever 20 14
Pertussis 72 11
Poliomyelitis (non-paralytic) — 1
Measles 1,164 98
Pneumonia 24 3
Dysentery 244 17
Food Poisoning 11 27
Puerperal Pyrexia 1 1
Erysipelas 6 —
Typhoid 2 —
Tuberculosis 16 16
1,560 188
From the table set out above, the following facts emerge
1. Scarlet fever notifications totalled 20, a rise of 6 on the 1962
figures.
2. There were again no cases of diphtheria notified.
3. Measles notifications rose from 98 to 1,164.
4. Pertussis notifications were 72, a rise of 61.
5. The incidence of Dysentery rose to 244. This was
accounted for by two outbreaks which occurred during the early
part of the year. Such outbreaks involve the department in a considerable
amount of extra work involving many home and school
visits. Thanks to the efforts of the Public Health Inspectors,
within a few months the infection was brought under control.
6. No cases of poliomyelitis were notified in 1963.
