Fumes and Noise.
Work in this field occupied the Public Health Inspectors to a
greater extent than usual during 1957.
Complaints continue to be received relating to alleged noise
nuisance and nuisance from fumes emanating from the Metal Box
Company's factory in Chequers Way, N.13. As this matter is still
being actively pursued, this report would not appear to be the
proper place in which to make anything in the nature of a final
statement. It might, however, be said that the number and extent
of observations kept on this factory and on the immediate vicinity
thereto has been, to say the least, extensive. Conferences have been
held between the Public Health Committee, the Metal Box Company
itself and local residents, at which the complaints made by residents
were fully ventilated and discussed.
As I have just said, the matter is still being actively pursued.
In view, therefore, of the fact that possible action in the future
might be prejudiced by a statement made at this juncture, it need
only be repeated that everything possible has been done by the
Public Health Committee and, indeed, by the Public Health
Department to establish the true facts of the case and to ascertain
what, if any, remedies might be applied.
In addition to the Metal Box Company, sixteen complaints
were received from residents alleging nuisance from fumes and/or
noise from various other industrial premises in the Borough.
Careful investigation was made into all these complaints, involving
in some instances long and continued observations by the Inspectors.
Where, as a result of observations it was proved there was justifica'
tion for the complaints, the Inspectors were able to effect improve'
ment by obtaining the co-operation of the firms concerned and
making constructive suggestions as to what could be done to abate
or mitigate the nuisance.
