cil, Eastern Electricity Board and several commercial firms. This
very practical assistance has been suitably acknowledged.
Window displays were arranged by the Eastern Electricity
Board and Eastern Gas Board.
Additional films were provided free of charge by the American
Embassy. Film strips and commentaries were lent by the Ministry
of Food.
(v) Although our Clean Food Month was a comparatively
modest effort, I think it can be said that the small expenditure involved
has been amply justified. The talks and visual demonstrations
supplied to more than 200 food handlers have been particularly
useful, while we were also extremely glad to have the opportunity
of visiting five schools in the district. In this latter
connection, I should perhaps state that, in addition to these visits,
I addressed the Head Masters and Domestic Science Teachers at
our five secondary schools, the idea being that information on food
hygiene should be passed on by the Domestic Science Teachers to
the pupils attending their classes.
(vi) As already mentioned, the organisations, firms and individuals
who assisted us in our campaign have been thanked.
Special mention might be made of the local press, which, as always,
was particularly helpful. Two articles were published in the local
press, one towards the beginning and one during the latter half of
the month. Although the co-operation of the local press is more
or less taken for granted in Southgate, this courtesy is none the less
appreciated. Indeed, it is quite obvious that, without the valuable
assistance so often provided by local editors, the work of health
education in Southgate would very materially suffer.
(vii) In conclusion, I should like to express my personal thanks
to all four Sanitary Inspectors, under the direction of Mr. Gooday,
for the valiant work carried out before and during Clean Food
Month. These duties were cheerfully undertaken, and contributed
in no small measure to the success of the venture.
