taken during an investigation into the unsatisfactory methods of
one manufacturer in respect of the production, storage and distribution
of ice-cream. At one stage of the investigation, the Public
Health Committee had seriously to consider possible revocation of
the registration of the premises for the manufacture and sale of
ice-cream. The proprietor, however, acting on advice received
from his trade association and from the Sanitary Inspectors,
effected improvements to his premises, and improved his methods
of manufacture, storage and distribution. These improvements
brought about a marked up-grading of the ice-cream concerned.
The Laboratory reports on the samples gave valuable assistance
in demonstrating to the proprietor (a) the unsatisfactory state
of affairs at the commencement of the investigation, and (b) the
marked improvement at its conclusion.
Establishments for Massage or Special Treatment
Under the Middlesex County Council Act, 13 existing licences
were renewed, and three new licences were granted.

The arrangements whereby samples of the water in the swimming
bath are taken at regular intervals has been continued. The
results of the samples taken during 1952 were satisfactory in every
case. Attendance at the bath of members of the St. John Ambulance
Brigade during crowded sessions and hot weekends has also
continued. This assistance is very greatly appreciated.
I can add nothing to the remarks which 1 have made in my
previous Annual Report regarding the usefulness of our Open-air
Swimming Bath, not only as a very pleasant amenity, but as a
truly health-giving service. I am always delighted to visit the
swimming bath, and to see the excellent manner in which the
premises are being maintained. It is particularly pleasant to call
in at the bath during a hot weekend and to see large numbers of
adults and young people enjoying themselves and gaining such
obvious benefit under delightful conditions.
