POPULATION.
The Registrar-General estimated the civilian population of the
Borough at the middle of 1946 to be 72,710, an increase of 7,740 as
compared with 1945.
BIRTHS—BIRTH RATE.
The nett total of births accredited to the district was 1,213. an
increase of 237 on the preceding year. Of these, 607 were males and
606 females (20 males and 24 females being illegitimate).
The birth-rate for the year was 16.68 per 1,000 of the population..
The birth-rate for England and Wales for 1946 was 19.1 and for:
the administrative County of London, 21.5.

During 1946, the number of births recorded was 330 greater than
the number of deaths, as compared with 195 in 1945.
The total number of births actually registered in the district
during the year amounted to 1,435, of which 23 were unnotified. The
percentage of births notified was therefore 98.4 as compared with
99.16 in 1945.
MORTALITY.
General Mortality and Death Rate.—The nett number of
deaths accredited to this district was 883, 102 more than in 1945.
This gives a death-rate of 12.14 per 1,000 of the population, an
increase of 0.12 on the rate for the previous year, which was 12.02.
The rate for England and Wales (1946) was 11.5 and for London
12.7.
