POPULATION
The Registrar General estimated the civilian
population of the Borough at the middle of 1941 to
be 64,890, 1,680 less than at the same period of
1940. He also states that "estimates of the numbers
and distribution of the non-civilian population are
not available"-. The -population and birth-rate
figures are, therefore, not strictly comparable with
those of previous years.
BIRTHS 2 BIRTH RATE.
The nett total births accredited to the district
was 647, a decrease of 60 on the preceding year. Of
these, 325 were males and 322 females (13 males and 9
females were illegitimate), although, as previously
indicated, the Registrar General gives a total of 611
births for the calculation of the Infant Mortality and
certain other rates.
The birth-rate for the year was 9.97 per 1,000
of the population. The birth-rate for England and
Wales for 1941 was 14.2 and for the administrative
County of London, 8.9
During 1941, the number of births recorded was
124 less than the number of deaths, as compared with
62 in 1940.
The total number of births actually registered in
the district during the year amounted to 584, of which
9 were unnotified. The percentage of births notified
was therefore 98.46 as compared with 97.87% in 1940.
Two hundred and nine births were notified by midwives.
