POPULATION.
The Registrar General's estimate of the population
at the middle of 1939 was 69,400, an increase of 1,540
over the estimate for 1938. This is taken as the population
of the Borough for the purpose of the calculation
of the Birth-rate, while the figure of 67,770 is given
as the estimate of the civilian population for the
calculation of the Death-rate.
The number of births exceeded the number of deaths
by 87, as compared with an excess of 126 births in 1938.
