part in conducting this scheme, it is intimately concerned both in
operation and results, and it is pleasing to be able to report that
the most cordial co-operation exists between the Nursing Association
and the Maternity Department. This co-operation is vital in
the interest of all concerned, and every effort is made to ensure its
continuance.
It was my privilege as Medical Officer of Health to attend a
number of the Nursing Association's Executive Committee meetings
during the year, it being thus possible to keep in close touch with
the work of the Association.
(6) As indicated above, home nursing of certain infectious
diseases is being undertaken by the Southgate Queen's Nursing
Association at the request of the Borough Council, where such home
nursing is considered necessary or desirable. The scheme is working
in a very satisfactory manner.
Midwives.—There are 10 midwives practising in the area.
These come under the supervision of the County Authority, and
none is employed or subsidised by the local Council.
It has already been stated that the Southgate Queen's Nursing
Association undertakes the midwifery work within the Borough,
under the jurisdiction of the Middlesex County Council. It has
also been stated that the scheme appears to be working in a smooth
and efficient manner, and that we on our side are co-operating as
and when required. There have been obvious difficulties to surmount,
but this is not a matter1 upon which a.ny comment is
required in the Report of Southgate's Medical Officer of Health.
The County Council is the responsible authority, and it merely
rests with us to make such representations regarding the well-being
of Southgate mothers as we may think proper. Up to the present,
it has only been necessary to indicate to the Queen's Nursing
Association the lines upon which co-operation appears most
desirable. Our suggestions have invariably met with a sympathetic
reception, and at the moment it would seem that the matter might
well be allowed to rest at that point.
Clinics and Treatment Centres.—The following Clinics
and Treatment Centres are available for the inhabitants of the
Borough :
