(iv) With the exception of the stripping of walls and the
removal of woodwork, as noted above, the work of
disinfestation is carried out by the Local Authority.
Disinfection of Books.—The arrangements indicated in the
Report for 1930 regarding the disinfection of books issued through
the Middlesex County Council libraries in the district remain
unaltered. During the year, 267 books were so disinfected.
The school and other books found in homes where cases of
notifiable infectious disease have occurred, are disinfected.
Arrangements are now being made whereby the books found in
homes where cases of non-notifiable infectious disease are discovered
will be treated in a similar manner, provided the discovery is
made at a sufficiently early date to allow of disinfection being of
any service.
Individual school books from class-rooms from which a case of
notifiable infectious disease has been notified, are also removed
and disinfected.
ISOLATION HOSPITAL.
The number of patients treated in hospital during 1936 was
565, as against 616 during 1935 and 622 in 1934 (This number
comprises the patients admitted during the year, together with
those in hospital on 1st January, 1936). It will be seen that this
number again shows a decrease, the hospital being slightly quieter
during 1936 than during either of the two preceding years. The
decreased number of patients was offset by the increased severity
of the cases being admitted, this being particularly noticeable
with respect to the diphtheria admissions; and also by the large
number of measles cases admitted during the epidemic of last winter
and spring. The total decrease is entirely explained by the drop
in scarlet fever admissions (256 to 159). This decrease would have
been still more marked had the number of measles cases admitted
to the hospital (88 as against 19 in 1935) not risen appreciably.
The following table sets out the number of patients admitted
to the hospital during 1936, and the areas from which those
patients were admitted: —
