46 cases were removed to the Isolation Hospital, representing
62.2 per cent. of the total number of cases notified.
The procedure with regard to the visiting of schools and the
supervision of cases after discharge from hospital remains as outlined
in detail in last year's Annual Report. Only one addition
has been made to the routine then set out. This consists of the
visiting of all cases approximately 12 months after their discharge
from hospital. The table set out immediately following this paragraph
summarises the results of these visits, together with the results
of the examinations made immediately after the patients' return
to their homes. From this it will be seen that the position remains
extremely satisfactory. It is now obvious that the administration
of serum and the discharge of patients after 3 weeks in hospital is
proving its worth. On the Hospital side, the complications have
materially fallen, while the patients appear to regain their
strength much more quickly. On the Public Health side, the fact
that no serious complication has occurred after discharge from
hospital, together with the fact that not a single "return" case
was met with during the year, would make it appear that the system
is sound and worthy of continuance.
