the district will receive the Council's serious and immediate attention,
and that any existing defects in the general arrangements
will be rectified at a very early date.
It is pleasing to report that the Council has decided to hire a
mechanical street gully cleanser. This apparatus was long overdue
and will be a welcome addition to the Public Health utilities of the
district.
Cesspools.—The number of cesspools remaining in the district
is 18. These continue to be cleansed periodically by a contracting
firm which carries out the work in an unexceptionable manner.
Roads.—There are now more than 81 miles of roads in the
district, made up as follows :—

Public Conveniences.— The new conveniences mentioned in
last year's Annual Report continue to operate satisfactorily, good
use being apparently made of them. The lack of a suitable convenience
in the New Southgate portion of the district is still making
itself felt.
Following representations to the Public Health Committee, the
hours of opening were extended in respect of the North Circular
Road convenience. This has considerably extended the usefulness
of the convenience, whose site makes it imperative that it should
remain open to a later hour than is necessary in the case of more
isolated conveniences.
Collection and Disposal of Refuse.— The system of refuse
collection detailed in the Annual Report for 1935 remains
unaltered, with the exception of certain minor, operative details.
The system still appears to meet the needs of the district in ah
adequate manner, although the future is not being lost sight of.
Additional vehicles and apparatus are being obtained, to cope with
the increasing demands on the service. The time does not yet seem
to have arrived when the refuse destruction plant itself requires
