As will be seen from the statistics set out in the previous few
pages, the work of the Clinics has continued unabated throughout
the year. The opening of the new Clinic at The Bourne has increased
the available facilities, and it is already evident that there is a
substantial demand for the services provided. The number of
attendances made at the Centres has increased by almost 2,000. On
the other hand, the number of domicilliary visits paid has fallen.
This is accounted for by the fact that, during a considerable portion
of the year, one of the Health Visitors was absent owing to sickness;
while, during yet another portion of the year, the work of the
Department had to be carried on without the services of the third
Health Visitor. The fullest advantage is still not yet taken of the
facilities available at the Pre-natal Clinic. In this connection, it
may be stated that arrangements have now been completed with the
Middlesex County Council whereby cases entering the North
Middlesex County Hospital for confinement will be referred to the
Council's Pre-natal Clinic for supervision. This is an excellent
arrangement and provides a much closer liaison between the
hospital at which the confinement may be expected to take place
and the Council's officers, than was hitherto possible. It is anticipated
that the numbers at the Clinic will rise following the inception
of this scheme, a satisfactory feature in itself, but not in any
way so important as the co-ordination to which reference has
already been made.
