Inspection of Cowsheds, Dairies and Milkshops.—The
cowsheds, dairies and milkshops in the district were regularly
inspected throughout the year, the conditions found therein being
satisfactory. The bacteriological examination of milk undertaken
at the Council's laboratory provides an additional and valuable
check upon such inspections, faulty methods of production and
distribution being capable of detection in this way.
Meat.—There are no public abattoirs in the district. Butchers'
shops are visited frequently, while slaughterhouses are kept under
strict control.
Considerably more slaughtering was carried out in the district
last year than hitherto, largely owing to the increased business
carried on by one particular firm. In addition, a second firm
removed from its former premises to a reconstructed building,
which has been passed as entirely satisfactory for the purpose.
The work of supervising the slaughtering of animals places
considerable responsibility upon the shoulders of the Sanitary
Inspectors and also occupies an appreciable portion of their time.
It will be realised that this work is of very considerable
importance, and it is pleasing to report that, although strict
supervision is maintained, the relations existing between the Public
Health officials and the firms carrying out the slaughtering have
up to the present been cordial.
The following is a summary of the work carried out during
1935:—
Total number of carcases examined, 5,992.
Bullocks, 84; Sheep and Lambs, 3,691; Calves, 112; Pigs,
2,105.
(1934: Bullocks, 54; Sheep and Lambs, 3,805; Calves, 79;
Pigs, 680. Total, 4,618.)
As a result of these examinations, 104 separate diseased or
unsound conditions were discovered, the carcases or organs receiving
the necessary attention. Details of these conditions are as
follows:—
