Dental Treatment.—After prolonged negotiations, an agreement
was concluded with the Eastman Dental Clinic whereby that
Clinic undertook the treatment of ante-natal women, and children
under the age of 5, sent to them from the Maternity and Child
Welfare Department. A scale of fees was drawn up and agreed
to by both parties. This scale was based upon the scheme for the
provision of milk to necessitous cases, the amount payable by the
patients being in proportion to their means, and the Borough
Council being responsible for collecting that proportion of the fee
payable by the patient. In addition to the cases for whom the
Borough Council have made themselves responsible, the Eastman
Dental Clinic also agreed to treat patients who could afford to pay
a certain limited amount for treatment, at their usual hospital
scale of charges. These patients will also be sent with a covering
note from the Maternity and Child Welfare Department, in order
that no unauthorised person may take advantage of this scale of
charges. An arrangement has also been made whereby the
necessary fares will be met in necessitous cases.
The agreement referred to above was not definitely concluded
until 1936, but the Eastman Dental Clinic also treated our patients
throughout the previous year. The following table sets out the
number of patients attending the Clinic, and the approximate
number of treatments given. It will be understood that, with the
new agreement in force, it will now be possible to supply much
more comprehensive figures.
