General Provision of Health
Services.
Hospitals .—General Hospitals.—The arrangement set out in
the Annual Report for 1930 regarding the provision of general and
special hospital accommodation for the inhabitants of Southgate
remain unaltered. They still appear satisfactory.
I'rorision fur Maternity Beds.—The agreement with the Royal
Northern Hospital and the Salvation Army Maternity Hospital to
admit Southgate mothers at reduced fees, continues to work satisfactorily.
As before, the North Middlesex County Hospital is also
being utilised by a proportion of our maternity cases.
Isolation Hospital.—Improvements have been carried out at
the Isolation Hospital during the year as follows : Addition of seven
bedrooms and fire escape facilities to Administration Block;
construction of new incinerator and porter's workshop; extension
of ultra-violet light facilities; installation of new internal telephone
system; improvements to garage; re-decoration to wards; improvements
to roads and paths; overhaul of disinfector, and several
important additions to the hospital equipment. In addition,
1.4(5 acres of additional land were taken into cultivation, thus
continuing the progressive policy of the past few years.
Further improvements are contemplated during the incoming
year.
The nursing staff has been increased to cope with the record
volume of work now being met with at the hosiptal. Instead of
14 the total now stands at 20, 1 new staff nurse and 5 extra
probationers having been engaged. A staff nurse has also been
transferred from the wards to special duties in connection with the
office, stores and laboratory, thus filling a long-felt need. Further
additions are contemplated in the near future, while extra private
nurses are obtained as and when necessary.
Apart from the nursing staff, a non-resident assistant porter
and a non-resident assistant gardener were engaged during the
,year, while the domestic staff was also increased owing to extra
work.
The discussions regarding the extension of the hospital are
still proceeding, and it is hoped that 1935 will see the fruition of
pinny years of long and arduous negotiations.
