There is no evidence to show that the social conditions of the
district have materially altered from those set out during the past
few years. The Social Service Council continues its valuable
auxiliary work and the standard of nutrition amongst the children
still reveals a satisfactorily high standard.
Meteorology.—The total rainfall recorded by the Council's
rain-gauge in Broomfield Park measured 21.63 inches during 1934,
the daily average being 0.059 inches. The greatest fall in 24 hours
was on November 9th, when 0.77 inches were recorded, and the total
days on which no rain fell was 225. As will be seen, the total
rainfall and daily averages were again very low during 1934. It
is perhaps interesting to note that, although the total rainfall for
the year 1934 was appreciably greater than that for 1933, the
number of days upon which measurable rain fell during 1934 was
5 less than during the previous year.
Once again I would emphasise the necessity for the provision
of a fully equipped meteorological station. Until such a station
is provided, complete records as to sunshine, temperature, wind,
etc., in addition to rainfall, will not be available and this long-felt
need will remain unmet.
