notifying certain cases with the object of safeguarding
their patients from possible annoyance from official
visits, or from a knowledge as to the actual cruise of
illness.
ISOLATION HOSPITAL.
During the year 286 cases were admitted—203 from
Southgate, 67 from Friern Barnet, and 13 from Wood
Green, and 3 from amongst the staff. Of these, 228 were
notified as scarlet fever, 53 as diphtheria, 4 as typhoid fever,
and 1 as encephalitis lethargica. In 3 cases sent in as
diphtheria the diagnosis was not confirmed by subsequent
bacteriological examinations.
During July an outbreak of chicken-pox occurred in one
of the scarlet fever wards, necessitating the placing of this
ward in quarantine for several weeks.
There were 8 deaths—2 from scarlet fever, 1 belonging
to Friern Barnet, and 1 to Wood Green; and 6 from
diphtheria, 2 belonging to Friern Barnet, and 1 to Wood
Green. Two of the cases from Southgate were moribund
on admission, and died in 2½ and 4 hours respectively.
